The Holland Dutch Varsity baseball team visited the Unity Christian Crusaders for their season opener, and also their first conference series of the 2025 High School Baseball season Wednesday afternoon. Game One of the conference double header started off rough for the Dutch who were plagued by errors and miscues, which put them in a 6-0 hole after the first inning. Things settled in after that defensively and they only allowed two more runs the rest of the game. The bats were active, but were unable to plate any runs resulting in an 8-0 loss the the Crusaders. Senior Gabe Bos took the loss on the mound, after going 5 innings allowing 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 3 walks. He also struck out 3. Junior Tanner Kingery mopped up the final inning, allowing a run on 1 hit and 2 walks while striking out 1. At the plate, the Dutch were led by Seniors Cody Rozema and Peyton Lehman. Rozema reached base all three times by recording a hit and a pair of walks. Lehman led the team with 2 hits. Fellow Senior Jacob Torres drove a double down the left field line as well. Game Two was a different story. The Dutch played perfect defense, committing no errors and had runners on the base paths constantly, but ultimately left too many runners on the base paths to secure the win. A late rally in the top of the seventh brought the game to a 4-4 tie after a clutch 2-RBI double by Senior Gabe Bos and a in-betweener fly ball by Sophomore Asher Folkert that fell to score Bos. The bottom of the seventh found the Crusaders with a runner on third base and two outs, whom they were able to drive in with a solid single through the right side of the infield for the walk-off win. Game two was led by Senior Robby Wiersma on the mound, who went the distance pitching 6 2/3 innings, allowing 5 earned on 7 hits and 6 walks while striking out 1. At the plate, the Dutch were led by Bos who stroked a single and double to score a team leading 2 RBIs. Peyton Lehman and Junior Tanner Kingery also had singles to add to the total. A pair of firsts were achieved today as well for Folkert and Junior Jay Cantu, who recorded their first Varsity hits. The Dutch open the season 0-2 and 0-2 in the OK Black Conference. They host the Crusaders on Thursday @ 4:00 PM for the conference series finale.
